Speaker of Parliament and leader of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed, on Sunday, called for a removal of Rozaina Adam, the parliamentary representative for Addu Meedhoo constituency, from the super-majority holding party.
The decision to remove MP Rozaina, presently chief whip of the MDP parliamentary group, allegedly came after her capacity to carry out her tasks as a member of MDP was questioned via the party WhatsApp group, a move supported by various MPs.
One of the few female lawmakers, Rozaina is known to frequently criticize the party on social media, often insinuating MDP is operated as though the entity is the private property of certain individuals - seemingly a dig at Nasheed, former Maldives' president and MDP founder.
The lawmaker is yet to respond to rumors surrounding her possible ejection from the party.
MDP's parliamentary group leader and representative for Henveiru Central Ali Azim, alleged that MP Rozaina does not communicate within the parliamentary group to discuss and rectify issues, seeking to first express her discontentment over party proceedings on the public sphere.
Recently, she indicated her disapproval of Speaker Nasheed's decision to call for a vote of no confidence against Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail, touting the move as being "too much".
In response, Speaker Nasheed stated that MDP members would not get caught in what he describes as the MP's trap laid out to acquire a power base and network throughout the party.
He further requested the lawmaker to refrain from criticizing members of the party over the no-confidence vote, stating that over 30 MPs had supported the decision.
