The government has resumed discussions with the management of Shangri-La in an effort to reopen the resort in Addu City, which has remained closed since the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the meeting was held yesterday with participation from key government figures including Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, Finance Minister Moosa Zameer, and Attorney General Ahmed Usham. Representing Shangri-La was Christopher Fong, Head of Investment and Asset Management.
Fong outlined the challenges the company has encountered in efforts to resume operations and shared the progress being made toward reopening.
The government, discussed areas where it could provide assistance and presented a detailed roadmap to support the reopening process.

The 500-bed Shangri-La resort was once a flagship development for Addu City, marking a significant boost for the region’s tourism industry.
In February 2023, the government divested its 30 percent stake in the resort after prolonged delays in resuming operations. While talks were previously held to facilitate reopening, no agreement was reached until now.
