Maldives National Party (MNP) candidate Mohamed Nazim announced his vision for Malé City on Saturday evening, August 19.
The former defense minister outlined his vision for the future of the Maldives capital, which includes the establishment of a railway system, the construction of cinema complexes, and the development of a modern shopping mall.
Nazim’s campaign team announced 16 large-scale projects planned by the candidate if elected for presidency. Nazim’s campaign is carried out under the banner “Ujaalaa Zamaan” (Bright Era).
The main highlight of the large-scale initiative unveiled by Nazim's team on Saturday evening is the monorail or express rail project. The initial phase of this project includes linking Malé, Hulhulé, and Hulhumalé, as well as connecting Malé and Vilimalé. The project further involves the scope to develop monorail terminals and overlap bridge connections.
Nazim's plans includes a significant housing initiative, with the goal of offering housing apartments to individuals who are registered under Male's residency or registry.
Hi vision includes construction of basic facilities and the development of reclaimed lands into modern cities.
Nazim also pledged to provide sovereign guarantee to landowners unable to develop their own properties due to financial constraints or complete housing projects that have been stopped for various reasons.
Nazim announced another mega project directed on the vacant plot next to Dharubaaruge, which will be a convention tourism project involving the development of two 25-storey towers. The towers would include;
- Convention floors
- Shopping mall
- City hotel
- Parking building
- Overlap bridge
Nazim assured that these towers would accommodate 100 local companies to establish their businesses, with a plan to include 20 male and 10 female entrepreneurs in these companies.
The MNP leader also unveiled his plan for the Malé Commercial Harbor area, which includes a ferry arrival and departure harbor project. The project's scope includes the development of terminals, overlapping bridge connections, as well as the installation of elevators and escalators.
Nazim announced a shopping center project for the atoll stores located in the local market area. The project includes;
- Parking floors
- Hyper-market floors
- Cinema
- Food courts
- Overlap bridge connections
- Elevators and escalators
In addition, Nazim pledged that the fish market and local market will be modernized and upgraded. The markets will be upgraded in the current fish market location. Nazim envisions clearing out the current local market zone to develop a modern market after reclaiming a portion of the lagoon opposite it.
Nazim’s vision involves completing the now stalled water park development project in Hulhumalé. The project includes development of international theme parks, shopping centers, parking building, and tourist rooms.
The plans involve development of an aquarium mall project in Hulhumalé Central Park. The mall reportedly will feature aquariums similar to Dubai malls along with a shopping mall, food courts, and entertainment floors.
Nazim shared his vision to develop a technology park as well. The park will feature a science auditorium, library, IT classrooms, short stay accommodation, halls for IT fairs and international call centers.
The MNP candidate next shared his ‘Happiness City’ project’s vision. The project entails development of a ‘Maldivian Center’, indoor sports complex, ice-skate park, music halls, theater, and a bowling alley. Besides this, the project includes an indoor surfing pool, gym, and a daycare center.
Under Nazim’s parking building project, multiple parking buildings will be developed in Malé and Hulhumalé. He also announced a pet hub project to establish pet care service centers.
Nazim’s major projects include road development initiatives including;
- Redesigning all Maleé City roads
- Water drainage system
- Solar powered streetlights
- Installing infrastructure required for a smart city
- Installing dewatering systems in Malé City roads
- Modern traffic lights
Nazim announced his vision for the Malé industrial village, which he claimed will be redeveloped as well. The project involves development of a labor park and a detention center for undocumented immigrants.
The MNP leader then announced his medical tourism project. The project involves development of buildings specifically for patients, hotel rooms, and launching air ambulance services. Additionally, Nazim announced higher education tourism plans as well. Under the project, Nazim aims to introduce international universities in the Maldives, provide student accommodation and facilitate student visa to foreign students.
