The government of Maldives has denounced calls by an Israeli Minister to build a synagogue inside the Al Aqsa mosque.
Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for a synagogue to be built inside Al Aqsa mosque, saying that Jews should be able to pray in the premises.
The Maldivian government released a statement last night condemning the call.
"The Al-Aqsa Mosque holds immense spiritual and historical significance for over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide. It is not only a revered place of worship, but also a symbol of Islamic heritage. The Government of Maldives calls on the Government of Israel to respect the historical and legal status of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions," the statement reads.
They emphasized that provocative statements such as these by Israeli officials contributed towards preventing a ceasefire agreement, and could lead to fueling religious conflict and further instability.
The Maldives called on the international community to intervene and to protect the rights of the Palestinian people.
In the statement, the government reiterated Maldives' support for the Palestinian cause.
