The Maldives Police Service has raided 10 locations in Malé and arrested five individuals on drug-related charges.
The Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed, tweeted that a special operation was conducted on Saturday based on intelligence reports about large amounts of drugs being smuggled into the country.
According to Commissioner Hameed, four kilogrammes of heroin were uncovered during the operation. From the pictures accompanying the tweet, bags of heroin could be seen hidden inside a washing machine as well.
The police conduct special operations periodically in the city in relation to drug cases. These operations usually result in the recovery of drugs and the arrest of a few individuals; however, there is still growing concern about the failure to apprehend major drug traffickers.
