Police should prioritise maintaining public confidence: President Solih

The top priority of the Police is to build public confidence in the service, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the 34th Police Initial Training Course held at the Police Academy in Addu City, the President said the that the Police face many difficulties and challenges due to the negative practices in the society.

These include drugs and extremism, he said, adding that the Police have done important work to solve these problems.

The President said that priority should be given to maintaining public confidence in the Police while resolving such issues that are of greatest concern to the people.

"The Police must accept the fact that even a mistake made by a single officer can undermine the credibility of the entire police force. Top priority should be given to maintain this trust and confidence," he said.

The President said the police had shown great work during the trying times of Covid-19.

However, now that the country has overcome the pandemic, the country is heading towards a new direction of sustainable development, the President said.

He added that the professional work of the Police is very important in order to achieve progress and development of the country.

"Economic stability and development in every country is achieved by having a strong police service. I hope that this responsibility is embedded in the minds of every police officer today," the President said.

The President also highlighted some of the international achievements of the police. The President said that the Maldives Police is an exemplary service for other countries.
