Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed land reclamation in Gaafu Alifu atoll, Dhaandhoo, and handed over the newly reclaimed area to the island’s council.

MTCC reclaimed the land in Dhaandhoo using its newest dredger, “Bodu Jarraaf.” The project officially commenced earlier in September with the new dredger; however, 50 percent of the reclamation work was already complete then.

The newly reclaimed 25 hectares of land area in Dhaandhoo was handed over to the Island Council at a special ceremony held on Friday evening with MTCC’s Chief Executive Officer Adam Azim officially and Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam.

Speaking at the ceremony, Azim emphasised the project’s importance to the contractor company.

“This project is special for MTCC because this is the first development project the new dredger was was utilised,” Azim said.

The new dredger is capable of digging up to 18 metres beneath sea level. It is also the latest IHC cutter-dredger Beaver model.

“Mahaa Jarraaf” is capable of digging up to 50 metres beneath sea level, and measures 92 meters in length and 16 meters in width, with a loading capacity of 3,700 cubic meters.

The Dhaandhoo land reclamation project was awarded to MTCC in 2020. The project included the dredging and reclamation of 25 hectares of land, the construction of an 833-meter revetment, and a 375-meter breakwater. Additionally, MTCC constructed 180 metres of groyne and a 345-meter geo-bag revetment. The project value was a reported total of MVR 185 million.
