The current Speaker of the Maldives Parliament, Mr. Mohamed Nasheed urged to change the entire structure of the legislative body.
According to the Speaker, the members of parliament should all represent the country's constituencies holistically.
He had called out for an amendment of the Maldives Constitution to accommodate the preposition.
In a statement made public on social media platforms, Nasheed highlighted that each lawmaker represents constituencies with a population of 5,000 people in each.
He postulated that this results in the increment of parliament seats after each consecutive parliamentary term due to the increasing population.
As a solution, Nasheed suggested limiting the number of parliamentary seats enforced through the constitution.
In addition to this, the Speaker emphasized the importance of appointing lawmakers that represent national-level constituencies.
He further detailed that national-list members are appointed by assigning one seat per each registered and legitimate political party.
