The bridge was announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in this year's Independence Day ceremony. He said then that work on this bridge would commence in 2026, and be completed within three years.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration had also had plans to build this bridge, however it was not contracted at the time.
