Theft and robberies spike as mid-Ramadan is reached

Police statistics indicate that the most reported crime within the first two weeks of Ramadan is theft and robbery.

Police statistics indicate that the most reported crime in Male' area within the first two weeks of Ramadan is theft and robbery.

Statistics show that between the beginning of Ramadan and the end of Sunday this week, 101 cases of robbery have been reported. This is a marked increase from the rate observed during the same period last year, which was 15 cases.

This year's reports includes 79 cases in Male', and 22 cases in Hulhumale'. Most robberies have taken place during the night.

Mugging cases are also noted, with total twenty cases reported, out of which 16 were in Male', and 4 in Hulhumale'.

Besides robberies, accidents have also increased in number, with many victims sustaining different levels of injuries and a large number of vehicles being damaged.

While a total of 86 accidents have been reported within this period, this includes 48 accidents in Male' and 38 accidents in Hulhumale'. Accidents most commonly occur in the hours between late afternoon to early evening.

In addition to these, 9 accidents that occurred on the Male'-Hulhumale' Bridge and Highway have also been reported.

There has also been fines levied against 63 individuals for driving through restricted areas during the prohibited times.
