Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has said that there are over 1000 unregistered vehicles on the streets of Male' and Hulhumale'.

In the report released at the launch of the Male' Fahi program last night, they said that they had observed that a large number of vehicles are stored on the streets pending sale or registration.

The report cited surveys they had conducted and said that upwards of 1,100 unregistered four wheeled vehicles are currently parked on the streets. Parking as such on the streets is against the law, and also contravenes business laws.

In order to resolve this issue, it has been decided that a specific area will be allocated to park such vehicles, with space to be leased from there. The ministry said that this business, like others, would also be conducted in a well-regulated manner.

As per the report, over 118,000 vehicles are currently registered in the Male' region, with some people having multiple vehicles registered under their name.

Additionally, vehicles bought under different installment schemes were also parked on the streets after the purchaser failed to make due payments.

The Ministry said that for such vehicles, they will introduce a buy back program. Then, after an evaluation of the vehicle is done, a system will be set up to decide whether to recycle, re-export or sell them as scrap metal.
