IAS, MNDF sign agreement to train pilots, engineers

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), on Tuesday, signed an agreement with Island Aviation Services Ltd (IAS) employing the latter to train pilots and aircraft engineers for military purposes.

Vice Chief of Defence Force Brigadier General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on behalf of the military while Managing Director Mohamed Rizvee signed on behalf of IAS.

The five-year agreement aims to create experienced and educated pilots and aircraft engineers to revamp the current state of military air services.

Currently, the two helicopters recently gifted to Maldives by the Indian military are operated by Indian officers. India has yet to act on their agreement to train Maldivian pilots to operate the aforementioned helicopters.

Formerly, discussions to acquire a Dornier aircraft for military purposes were also reported to have taken place.
