Male' garage fire: Over 30 individuals transferred to temporary shelter

National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) reports transporting of over 30 people to temporary shelters following the garage fire in the early hours of Thursday.

The west block of Maafannu Senrose erupted in fire with massive property damage reported already. Over 10 deaths have been confirmed, nine of them Indians and one Bangladeshi national while an eleventh body was discovered by morning.

Authorities report they are currently attempting to recover further casualties.

The most recent updates from NDMA confirmed that 11 locals and 12 expatriates have been transported to temporary shelter. Media official speaking from the agency further claimed the number of individuals being relocated, is likely to increase since rescue work is ongoing.

This is by far the most dangerous fire incident reported from Male' City in terms of both property damage and casualties.

Chief Executive of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Hisan Hassan confirmed residents from four houses neighboring the place of incident have been relocated. Speaking on the aftermath, Hassan attests relocating 30 locals and 28 expats, which included Indians, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans to temporary camps at Maafannu outdoor stadium.

While they await at the Maafannu temporary shelter, authorities are currently attempting to transport them to Jamaluddin School for accommodation.

The fire was controlled nearly four after it erupted in the garage, situated at the corner of Koarukendi Hingun and Iskandar Magu.
