A tourist who went missing while surfing at Meemu atoll Muli, had swum for safety.

The tourist was able to swim their way to Veyvah of the same atoll.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) claims, the tourist, a Czech Republic national, reached for safety during late afternoon. The authority received confirmation from Veyvah council at around 02:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11.

Veyvah council president Mamdhooh Waheed, speaking on behalf of the tourist, confirms the surfer was caught in an ocean current amid sudden rainfall. The tourist was dragged outwards from their surfing spot, after which they had swum for safety.

The tourist's companions, who were near the site of incidence on a speedboat, failed to catch sight of them amid the stormy weather.

After they were dragged out of the island's vicinity, the surfer had attempted to paddle their way back to Muli. But the ocean current acted against them, according to local reports.

Instead of swimming against the currents, the surfer redirected attention to swim along the current to seek a safe harbor, until they reached Veyvah.

The surfer ran ashore to the south end of the island.

Veyvah Council president affirms that the surfer did not sustain any injuries, and their health was stable.
