The opposition coalition, consisting of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC), finalised the decision submit a case to the Supreme Court regarding bilateral agreements with India to develop a Coast Guard harbour at Uthuru Thilafalhu.

The proposal to investigate the agreements which "threatened Maldivian independence and sovereignty", and then subsequently lodge the case with the apex court was approved during a PPM and PNC council meeting.

According to opposition chief spokesperson Heena Waleed, the coalition's legal team was currently collecting information regarding the Uthuru Thilafalhu issue. She added that PPM and PNC would request the nullification of any agreements endangering the country's independence.

Furthermore, the council also approved an internal motion to seek the dismissal of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in connection to concerns surrounding the Uthuru Thilafalhu issue.

On Monday, former Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer leaked a document on social media, claiming it was a draft of the agreement reached with the Indian government to develop a Coast Guard harbour at Uthuru Thilafalhu.

MNDF has strongly denied the validity of the document and any of the details mentioned in it.

Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamal asserted that the Coast Guard harbour being developed at Uthuru Thilafalhu would be fully under the ownership and management of the Maldivian government.

The Major General also assured that the agreement with India posed no security threats to Maldives or its citizens, noting that no foreign military personnel would be stationed at the base following development.

The agreement regarding Uthuru Thilafalhu was signed on February 21, during the ongoing official visit of Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr S.Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
