Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu, has stated that he envisions the country's football to flourish in the foreseeable future.

After inaugurating the ceremony to launch Public Service Media (PSM)'s coverage of the UEFA European Football Championship 2024, scheduled to begin on June 14, Rafiu expressed his optimism about the country's sports scene, including football, experiencing significant growth in the near future.

"By God's will, I see the country's sports, including football flourishing in the foreseeable future," said Rafiu.

He affirmed that revitalizing the sports scene on a national scale is a high-priority initiative for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. He further highlighted the support and cooperation offered by the government in achieving this goal.

Responding to questions from members of parliament in the parliament chambers last month, Rafiu stated that efforts to establish a system representing the country's football at a national scale have commenced and are proceeding at a fast pace.

President Muizzu had earlier expressed concerns over the deteriorating state of the country's football scene. During his presidential address given earlier this year at the opening of parliament, he highlighted that the country's football had plummeted to an unprecedented low on a regional scale.

“Looking at the people’s beloved [sport], football, we have fallen to a standard that we have never before been in a regional tournament,” the President said.
