Maldives’ Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel met with Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Dr Ian Borg as part of his official visit to the country.
The meeting, held at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in Valletta, focused on strengthening bilateral ties between the two island nations.
Despite their geographic distance, both ministers noted the shared values and similar challenges faced by small island states.
Describing the visit as a key step towards deepening relations, the two ministers stressed the need for greater collaboration, knowledge exchange, and joint action on shared priorities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that both ministers reaffirmed mutual dedication environmental stewardship, especially shifting towards renewable energy. They also agreed to explore new trade opportunities and encourage foreign investment, aiming to build a more inclusive and resilient economic partnership.
People-to-people connections were also highlighted, particularly through cooperation in tourism, fisheries, and higher education, the ministry said.
Minister Khaleel is also scheduled to hold talks with other senior members of the Maltese cabinet.
Minister Khaleel is joined on the visit by Foreign Ministry Secretary Dr Hala Hameed and Senior Under Secretary Hassan Hussain Shihaab.
