The former president of Sri Lanka, Chandrika Kumaratunga, on Monday welcomed the recent pact signed by former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed, and opposition leaders Qasim Ibrahim and Imran Abdulla to work jointly against the current government of the Maldives.
A statement released by Chandrika’s office read that she approves of the opposition’s pact to strengthen democratic policies and ensure basic rights in the Maldives. She stressed that political parties and civil institutions must work to ensure justice and the rights of the people in countries where political tensions are high.
