The Maldives Correctional Service stated today that no basic services have been suspended for any inmates in prisons.
In a post made on X (formerly Twitter), Corrections said that while some prison rules have been changed to ensure prison safety and security and to strengthen operations, no essential benefits or services that should be provided to inmates and detainees have been reduced.
Corrections said that while some detainees at Maafushi Prison sometimes don't use the food provided by the service, they continue to use items purchased commercially or their own food supplies.
The institution also stated that no detainee's health has deteriorated due to any circumstances requiring special treatment or hospital admission.
Reports have spread on social media claiming that inmates at Maafushi Prison are conducting a hunger strike and that some people's conditions have severely deteriorated, requiring hospital admission. A video has also circulated showing prison officers transporting an inmate on a stretcher.
