Mahibadhdoo constituency MP Ahmed Thoriq said today that as Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) did not take any action in the face of the worsening economic situation of the country, it is most prudent at this point for him to take responsibility for that and resign from the position.

Speaking in today's debate in parliament on the Public Accounts Committee's decision on the matter of advising President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to dismiss MMA Governor Ali Hashim, Thoriq said that the previous administration led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had printed MVR 7.7 billion, and that MVR 6 billion from this had been changed to be repaid in 50 years at a low interest.

Thoriq further said that while the GDP debt ratio has to be held at 60 percent, the figure has risen to 120 percent.

He said that the Governor had stood by without taking action when all this had been done.

"The Public Accounts Committee has advised even now to counsel the President to remove the Governor from his position. The best course of action is for the Governor to accept he did not fulfill his responsibilities, and to hand in his resignation," Thoriq said.

In addition to the Governor, the previous Maldivian Democratic Party government also must take responsibility for the economic losses faced by the country, Thoriq said.

He pointed out that earlier, when acting as an opposition party, concerns about government spending during the Covid-19 pandemic had been brought up by them in parliament. He said that even then they had called on the Governor to intervene.

Thoriq maintains that the country is now at the brink of bankruptcy due to the Governor turning a blind eye to the bad decisions made by the previous MDP government.
