Maldives Journalism Association (MJA) reportedly is preparing to execute a special workshop on fact-checking, and identifying factually incorrect source in news correspondence.

The workshop, funded by European Commission (EC) is a collaborative effort by MJA and InterNews and IFJ under "Stronger Media Through Enhanced Freedom of Expression and Right to Information" program.

According to MJA the workshop will assist its participants to identify unreliable sources for information, and eliminate their inclusion in reporting. Moreover, the initiative aims to enrich fact checking in the Maldivian journalism field.

Registration is open effective from November 6 until 10. A total of 10 participants will be given the opportunity, confirms MJA, with top priority given to journalists or reporters.

MJA further notes the workshop was necessary amid expanding information sources. It highlighted the increasing number of untrue or factually incorrect information spread on various social media platforms, which the workshop attempts to educate its participants on.

The collaborative effort aims to provide information sessions for its participants on the methods of identifying unreliable or untrue sources. Additionally, the initiative will develop next generation of trainers who will provide similar training or awareness programs for other industry peers on information vetting.

Experts in the field will reportedly provide lectures during the session.

MJA affirms its commitment to increase trained professionals in fact-checking or source vetting, while fact checking incubators will be developed within newsrooms of local media outlets. The association confirms it aims to facilitate technical and financial support for the cause in the prospective future.
