A series of fatal attacks on stray cats have surfaced in capital Male' City.
According to famed local singer and animal rights activist, Mira Mohamed Majid, most of the attacks occurred in the vicinity of Champa Central Hotel.
"Their heads were beaten in. By now, I've come across at least four dead cats," said Mira.
The perpetrators behind the violent attacks are a local group, according to some animal rights activists.
Humane Society of Maldives also met with Male City Council last Saturday regarding the brutal killings.
Male City Council noted that the number of dead cats spotted around the city has increased, while Mira stated that abuse against strays is on the rise.
"I recently [saw] a man with a toddler, dragging a cat by a rope around its neck", she said.
"Cruelty against animals is very saddening. Humanity should not be reserved only for humans".
Cruelty to animals constitutes a Class 3 Misdemeanor under the Penal Code, with convictions of 1- 6 months in prison.
