The island of Kendhoo in Baa Atoll has been experiencing a power failure since yesterday afternoon. Two of the three generators used to power the island's electricity grid failed, plunging the island into a complete blackout.
Kendhoo Council President Ibrahim AbduRahman confirmed this to Mihaaru News.
AbduRahman said that from 9pm last night, the streets were getting electricity consecutively for thirty minutes each.
Kendhoo has two 400kW generators and one 200kW generator. Of these, the two 400kW generators have been damaged beyond use.
AbduRahman said that while the island faced a complete blackout yesterday, they have been facing intermittent power interruptions over the past six months, which each day bringing a power cut of two to three hours.
He said that the island's council had raised concerns of this with Fenaka and other relevant authorities, who had assured that the matter would be resolved ahead of last Ramadan. However, the issue remained unaddressed, resulting in yesterday's major power failure.
A team from Fenaka visited the island at 8.30pm last night, AbduRahman said. Although they worked on fixing the generators, it proved to be in vain.
Due to this, a request was also made to MWSC to allow use of the 150kW generator the company had taken to the island for use in their water and sewerage project.
Kendhoo, with a population of 1400, remained in the dark last night, with many residents opting to sleep outside their homes, on streets and by the beach. AbduRahman said that many, including children, were sleeping outside last night on foldable beds and recliners.
