President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met on Sunday with the 'Hiyaa People's Association' to discuss the rent reduction for the Hiyaa public housing units.

The association said the meeting was held to share the concerns of the residents of the Hiyaa flats with the President. The biggest concern raised at the meeting was the increase in rent prices.

Hiyaa People's Association Super Admin Ali Rifau told Mihaaru news that the government will discuss reducing the rent of Hiyaa flats. The President also proposed three options for reducing rents, he said.

Rent reduction options include:

- Reduction of rent for the period of repayment of loans taken by the owners of the Hiyaa flats for the finishing work.

- A reduction in rent for those who need it after conducting a survey.

- Rent reduction for all.

According to Rifau, a special committee will discuss the rent reduction based on the survey being conducted to assess the situation of the people living in the Hiyaa flats.

"The President gave the assurance that with these three options, and after discussions with the special committee, he will meet with us once more with their decisions. And a formal decision will be taken after that," he said.

The rent for the flats is now MVR 8,500 per month. Residents have protested several times, demanding a reduction in the amount to MVR 5,000. However, the government had earlier said that the rent could not be reduced to that amount.

Rifau said during the meeting with the President earlier, the social difficulties faced by the Hiya residents and public transport difficulties were raised. A payment relief option for the deposit of Vinares flats instead of paying the entire amount in full was also discussed.
