The Maldivian government has decided to back India's bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the term 2028–2029.

A statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday said that the decision to support India was made following Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar's visit to the Maldives last week.

"The Maldives' strong support for India is rooted in the strong collaboration and tight links of friendship that exist between both countries," the ministry's statement read.

Maldives has been a close partner of India. This relationship is rooted in a shared cultural heritage, as well as economic and security ties. With India seeking a seat on the United Nations Security Council, the Maldives' support is significant.

The election will take place in June 2027 during the 81st meeting of the UN General Assembly.

Maldives and India have a history of cordial and friendly relations, which have been further strengthened in recent years. The two countries have cooperated on various issues, including trade, tourism, and maritime security. Maldives is also a member of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), a regional forum that promotes cooperation among countries bordering the Indian Ocean.

The Foreign Ministry also noted that India has consistently shown "strong and effective leadership in maintaining international peace and security," and that it has been a strong supporter of the ideals and principles outlined in the United Nations Charter.

"The Government of Maldives is confident that India will be a voice for all developing countries on the Security Council, and will continue to make meaningful contributions towards global discourse on peace and security in the years to come."

In 2018, when former President Abdulla Yameen was in office, the Maldives tried to join the UN Security Council but were defeated by Indonesia.
