Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is to formulate a bill to regulate rent of housing.
The Ministry released a notice, searching for an individual to draft the proposed bill. Furthermore, the notice revealed that the bid will close on January 10, 2019.
The Ministry is yet to disclose any details on the proposed policy.
While some countries have regulated rent prices, Maldives to date has never adopted such a policy in its constitution.
The issue of rent, especially in the Greater Male' area, has largely faced a public outcry for reform.
Former Representative of Kulhudhufushi South, Haa Dhaalu Atoll Mohamed Nasheed, in 2014, submitted a bill to the parliament regarding rent. However, the bill only sought to protect the rights of both landlords and tenants.
The bill was subsequently thrown out of parliament.
