The Democrats parliamentary group has requested the parliament’s administration that they do not schedule any sessions to proceed with the no-confidence motion filed against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed until the case filed by Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) with the Supreme Court regarding this matter is settled.

The Democrats’ Parliamentary Group’s Leader, MP for Central Henveiru constituency Ali Azim said in a letter addressed to the parliament’s Secretary General that it is against parliamentary norms and democratic principles to go ahead with the resolution until the Supreme Court makes a ruling on the case after debating the matter.

“[We believe] that debating this issue in the parliament and concluding it will influence the case filed in the Supreme Court,” Azim said in his letter.

Even though the no-confidence motion filed against Nasheed had been scheduled on four different occasions, the sessions had to be cancelled as Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla had called in sick.

The constitutional case filed by MDP to the Supreme Court is filed for next Monday.

The party requested the court to rule that the parliament cannot attend to any other matters until the no-confidence motion has been attended to first.

In addition to The Democrats, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) has intervened in this issue.
