In a post on X, President Muizzu expressed his condolences to Samah's family and emphasized that strict action will be taken against those driving over the speed limit.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has directed authorities to amend laws and regulations to impose stricter punishments for speeding, following a fatal accident involving a speeding sports car.
The accident occurred around 03:00 hrs in front of the Ooredoo head office near Central Park in Hulhumale'.
Hassan Samah, 23, a Prisons Officer at Maldives Correctional Service and a resident of Laamu atoll Isdhoo, was on his way to participate in the TFG marathon when a speeding car collided with his motorcycle. Samah sustained serious head injuries and died shortly after being taken to Hulhumale' Hospital.
Police have identified the driver of the sports car as Mohamed Visam Siduqee, 26, a resident of Seenu atoll Hithadhoo. He has been arrested in connection with the incident.
In a post on X, President Muizzu expressed his condolences to Samah's family and emphasized that strict action will be taken against those driving over the speed limit, regardless of the time or place in the country. He said that government agencies have already been instructed to amend laws and regulations to enforce stricter measures against speeding.
"Relevant government agencies have already been instructed to make necessary changes to laws and regulations to impose stricter measures against people driving over the speed limit on any island in the Maldives, at any time," President Muizzu said.
The President also called for public cooperation to prevent dangerous incidents and added that the government would take necessary measures to ensure the roads of Male' and other islands are safe and peaceful for everyone.
Police said they received a report about the incident at 02:48 hrs, involving a speeding car colliding with a motorcycle.
The accident occurred after he had driven some friends to the venue where the TFG marathon was taking place.
Frequent concerns have been raised about speeding sports cars in Hulhumale' on weekends, posing risks to the public. The area near Central Park has seen previous incidents, including a fatal collision involving a motorcyclist, and a similar crash occurred in Hulhumale' Phase 2 last month.
