Maldives Police Service on Sunday, revealed that a total of 50 road accidents were reported in capital city Male' during the week preceding the country's independence day.

According to Police, at least 15 individuals were injured as a result of these accidents.

Maldives Police Service's Traffic Management Department announces its weekly traffic related statistics for 20-26th July.

However, this is not a completely accurate representation of the total number of accidents that have occurred, as parties involved in most minor accidents typically resolve the issue amongst themselves without involving the authorities. Hence, such incidents are not recorded in the police database.

Moreover, the law enforcement authority noted that it fined 256 individuals for parking violations and towed a total of 43 vehicles.

While 55 people were fined for speeding, 109 individuals were fined for driving without a license.

Over the past decade, an increasing amount of roadside casualties have occurred in the islands of Male', Hulhumale' and other large islands with major roads such as Addu and Laamu Atoll.

In January 2019, a 17-year-old boy passed away after ramming into a parked pickup truck in Male'.
