Ministry of Higher Education disclosed, on August 12, that over MVR 340 million was spent on providing opportunities for higher education, from November 2018 till date.

According to information publicised by the government, during this time, a total of MVR 135.7 million was utilized to grant first-degree programmes without charge to a total of 6,155 students.

Introduced in February 2019, the undergraduate programmes offer students a chance to pursue degrees, free of fees, across two state-owned universities.

The ministry revealed that 763 student loans and 272 scholarships, amounting to a loan amount of MVR 205.2 million, were extended since President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took office.

"The state is carrying out countless efforts to ensure Maldivians are capable and highly educated", said the message tweeted by the Higher Education Ministry's official handle.

"This is the reason why a large percentage of the state budget was allocated for the education sector".

President Solih had formerly assured that the higher education opportunities provided by the state will not be obstructed due to the challenged posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Higher Education Ministry continued to arrange fees and stipend for students in need who were registered for the state's education programmes.
