A Maldivian man wanted on assault charges and listed on an Interpol red notice has been arrested by police seven months later.
The suspect, identified as Mohamed Sibth Abdulla, 19, from Male', was ordered by the Criminal Court on Thursday to be placed in custody pending further investigation.
The court ruled that sufficient evidence had been submitted to charge Sibth Abdulla with involvement in the crime, including CCTV footage snapshots and witness statements.
According to the evidence, the man is believed to be an active participant in the gang violence. Witnesses also indicated that a weapon was used in the altercation, the court order stated.
The court order further noted that Sibth had been absconding for about seven months, prompting the issuance of an Interpol red notice. He was arrested abroad and deported back to the Maldives. The court cited his high risk of fleeing and his involvement in a violent altercation involving multiple individuals as reasons to place him in remand.
Criminal Court Judge Ismail Shafeeu, who presided over the case, ruled that Sibth's arrest was lawful, as it followed a legal notice issued by authorities.
