President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced his decision to transform the fishing industry in the Maldives by establishing a National Registry of Fishers.

This decision, aligned with the 'Hafthaa 14' roadmap of the current Administration, reflects the government's commitment to elevating the status of fishing as a recognized professional industry.

During a press conference held at the President's Office, Under Secretary for Public Policy Mohamed Firzul, emphasized the significance of this move. Fishing, despite being a vital sector, lacks recognition from financial institutions, posing challenges for fishermen in securing funds. The establishment of a comprehensive register, open to the public, aims to address these issues and propel the fishing industry to new heights.

According to Firzul, the registry will enable fishermen to enter the banking system, access targeted loans, and access services such as social security and subsidies directly. The criteria for enrollment in the registry specify that individuals must derive their primary income from fishing, ensuring that those engaged in the fisheries sector receive the recognition they deserve.

The initiative to compile a National Registry of Fishermen is mandated under the Fisheries Act, enacted in 2019, although the process has been delayed until now. The decision coincides with the 42nd Fishermen's Day celebration in the Maldives, underlining the government's dedication to fulfilling the newly-elected administration's pledge.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources submitted a paper to the Cabinet, outlining the necessity of the registry to provide comprehensive documentation for tuna stocks, reef fisheries, and associated fishing vessels. Despite the Fisheries Act's mandate, a comprehensive registry had not been instituted, prompting the need for action.

In line with the Administration's pledge, the registry will maintain meticulous records of various fishing activities, including reef fishing, recreational fishing, and sports fishing. This approach reflects the government's commitment to not only address immediate financial challenges but also to ensure a sustainable and well-documented future for the fishing industry in the Maldives.
