Art gallery closed, artists express concern

The Maldivian Artists Community has expressed concern that the National Art Gallery has not been opened for many days since it was closed for repairs.

In a statement, Artist's Association said it received complaints that many professional visual artists in Maldives were facing difficulties due to the closure of the gallery for many days. Many of the events planned by the association have also been delayed due to the closure.

“The delay in hosting exhibitions, especially those involving talented young artists, is a huge setback for the art sector in Maldives,” the statement said.

According to the association, several discussions were held with the Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Arts Minister, political appointees in the ministry and even some members of the National Centre for the Arts (NCA) in the matter.

However, the association expressed concern that the desired results have not been achieved so far.

The Art Gallery has been closed for repairs and finishing work is currently underway, according to the media official at the ministry. The official expects the facility to be completed and opened within the next month.
