MVR 15 million grant scheme for farmers in three atolls

The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has signed an agreement with the SME Development and Finance Corporation (SDFC) to launch a grant scheme of over MVR 15 million targeted towards farmers.

The Ministry, in a statement, said that the agreement is part of a matching grant of MVR 15,188,700 to provide financial assistance to farmers under the Maldives Agribusiness Programme (MAP), a joint initiative of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

The 'Agribusiness Matching Grant Programme' is a scheme targeted towards farmers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) engaged in agricultural activity in 26 islands of Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, and Shaviyani atolls, which are carrying out MAP activities, the statement read.

The MAP project is implemented in 26 islands across three atolls, providing financial assistance, training, and information to farmers.

According to the Ministry, the main objective of the project is to encourage farmers to adopt modern technology in farming practices.
