The Commander of the United States Indo-Pacific Command Admiral John Aquilino paid a courtesy call to Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon to discuss areas of cooperation between Maldives and the US.
Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon has said that in alignment with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's foreign policy, the Maldives aims to maintain friendly and neutral relations with all countries with an intention to be respectful, but assertive when faced with threats or intimidation while upholding the sovereignty of Maldives.
Minister Ghassan's remarks were made during discussions with Admiral John Aquilino, the Commander of the United States Indo-Pacific Command on Sunday, January 21.
According to the Defense Ministry, Minister Ghassan and Admiral Aquilino met to explore ways to further strengthen defense cooperation between Maldives and the US, aiming to achieve and maintain regional security.
During the meeting, Minister Ghassan reiterated President Muizzu's policy to maintain friendly and neutral relationships with all countries, in line with the Maldives foreign policy, the Ministry said.
In addition to meeting Minister Ghassan, Admiral Aquilino also held discussions with Chief of Defense Force Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef.
The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said that during the meeting, they discussed potential areas for cooperation between the two countries in addition to maintaining regional peace and security.
