Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim called onto the government to take actions required to recover the country from its economic situation, and said he and the other MPs are prepared to make all necessary sacrifices.
Maamigili MP and leader of Jumhooree party Qasim Ibrahim said today that he is ready to make any sacrifice necessary to reduce government expenditure.
Speaking during the debate of the state sponsored bill on the country's debt, Qasim said that his comments yesterday about not agreeing to slash MPs' salaries despite the crippling situation of the country's economy was because the parliament carries the most responsibilities among the three estates of the government.
However, the parliament members are ready to take all necessary steps to prevent the country from having to go into the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, if the government takes action to resolve the issues of jobs being given irresponsibly, state owned enterprises and other issues the government needs to resolve.
He also added that he will welcome the steps being taken by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to recover the country from its current economic state.
"Members of the parliament are willing to sacrifice whatever it takes. I can tell you for sure that I am here to do it. I am sure members of parliament are [also] ready to take whatever "bitter medicine" required to save the country," Qasim said.
Speaking further, Qasim reiterated his call onto the government against delaying corrective action. If Maldives is included in the IMF programme, subsidies given out for even the most basic needs would have to be stopped, he said, adding that there is no way out of this without immediate determinative action.
Qasim said that regardless of the presidential pledges made by the government to come into power, it needs to take the necessary action with the country in mind.
No president has fulfilled all their pledges in the past, but what is important right now is to take the steps which are necessary for the country.
