Fenaka contracts Chinese company to resolve Addu’s electricity issues

A Chinese company has been contracted to build a powerplant capable of sustaining up to 50 megawatts in Addu City to resolve the city's electricity problems.

Chinese company, DEC Dongfeng Electric Machinery Co., Ltd has been contracted to resolve the electricity issues faced by the residents of Addu City.

Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Limited, Muaz Mohamed Rasheed had signed the agreement with Dongfeng’s Vice President at the ceremony held at Fenaka headquarters.

During the ceremony, Muaz stated that the electricity shortage in Addu is in desperate need for a solution and remarked that despite the former government making several attempts to resolve it, they were unsuccessful.

“With this agreement we made today, a permanent solution will be found for the issue (Addu’s electricity problem) which will be effective for about 20 to 25 years,” he said.

The agreement entails the establishment a powerplant equipped with the most modern facilities that will allow usage of 32 megawatts of electricity.

“This plant will be installed in phases. That is, installing 2 gensets of 9.8 megawatts and 2 gensets of 5.8 megawatts.” he said.

Muaz affirmed that this powerplant will have the capacity to upgrade upto 50 megawatts by the conclusion of the project. Moreover, he remarked that Hulhumeedhoo will also be supplied with electricity once the construction of the bridge links the island with the rest of the city.

This project employs a Developer Finance payment system and the settlement duration agreed for this project by Fenaka is 12 years.
