Man in serious condition after being stabbed, thrown into sea

A 26-year-old man was stabbed and thrown overboard from a fishing vessel on Friday, and is currently undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

According to Police, the man, Ismail Hamaadh swum to Maalhos, Alif Alif Atoll, and was initially taken to Maalhos Health Center. However, due to the seriousness of his condition, he was transported to capital Male' via sea ambulance.

Further, it was revealed that Hamaadh sustained injuries in a struggle that took place on the boat.

".. so far, our investigations show that he was stabbed with a knife and thrown into the sea."

Police media officials stated that "investigations are underway and we are questioning those connected to the case."

It was later revealed one of the crew members of the boat was under Poice custody.

Local media Mihaaru reported via residents of the island that the man swam to Maalhos on his own at approximately 03:00 on early Friday.

A resident of the island who spoke to Mihaaru stated that two people came after hearing Hamaadh called for help. Those who found him took him to the hospital. The resident added that due to the extent of his injuries, they called and informed the island councillors and other authorities as well.

Mihaaru also reported that the man sustained multiple stab wounds all over his body, including to his head and face.

His family state that his condition seems to be improving slightly since he was brought to IGMH.
