Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau has commended the officers involved for their handling of Thursday night's hostage situation, describing the operation as successful.

Meeting the officers yesterday, he said that although it was the first time officers had had to deal with such a situation, they had responded professionally and competently and neutralized the threat.

Shujau further noted that communications during the operation had been handled very well, leading to the operation being held with excellent coordination. The CP also said that it was a justified decision to act to neutralize the threat in consideration of the situation and possible escalation. He said that the threat had been neutralized without causing major injury to either the victim or the suspect.

He expressed pride in the police response to the incident, saying it is proof that officers would show no hesitation when it comes to saving the life of a member of the public.

Shujau noted that the Police had received praise from the public for their actions, and further said that they accept constructive criticism and advice that had been given by others.

He emphasized the importance of continuing to have further trainings to handle dangerous situations such as this, and called on the officers to always remain in the service of the public.

Thursday night's incident saw a couple's argument heating up into a physical altercation, with the man, later identified as Adam Athuhar, holding the woman hostage at knife point when police tried to intervene.

As he tried to flee the scene on a motorcycle being driven by the victim, still at knife point, Police had intervened and hit him with a baton, rescuing the victim.

The Commissioner checked on the health of the victim of Thursday night's hostage situation. She has been released after receiving treatment at IGMH and is in good health. The victim is known to be employed at Maldives Police Service.
