President's Office has disclosed the receipts of former President Solih after the Attorney General's Office withdrew its case at the Supreme Court against the disclosure of the receipts detailing expenses of his trip to the United States.
President's Office has disclosed the receipts following the Attorney General’s Office's withdrawal of the prosecution’s appeal to the Supreme Court against the disclosure of receipts detailing the expenses of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s trip to the United States.
The High Court last year had upheld the Information Commissioner's order for the disclosure of the expenses incurred during Solih's visit to deliver a speech at the United Nations in 2022. The prosecution had appealed this decision at the Supreme Court during the previous government.
Former journalist and current Central Hithadhoo MP Ahmed Azaan requested the disclosure of this information. He said in a post on X that he had received receipts of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's visit to the United States, which had been disclosed under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's transparency policy.
The prosecution defended its stance at the Supreme Court hearing last week, stating that the receipts for the former president's travel expenses should not be disclosed. Although the receipts were not disclosed at the time, the prosecution noted that the travel expenses had already been paid.
MP Azaan expressed his dissatisfaction with the prosecution's arguments on social media.
However, the Attorney General's Office issued a statement on Tuesday last week announcing the decision to withdraw the case after further investigations, and that the receipts would be disclosed as directed by the High Court.
Previously, the prosecution had argued that the receipts were not considered information and that only the details on the receipts regarding the expenses constituted information, which had already been released.
