Tree Top Hospital has made history as the first medical institution in the Maldives to offer in vitro fertilization (IVF) services.

Tree Top Hospital inaugurated its fertility center to provide IVF services, which was officially unveiled by Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday, May 29.4

Tree Top Hospital's fertility center was inaugurated by the Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday, May 29.

Thanking Tree Top Hospital for introducing the previously unavailable service in the Maldives, President Solih said that the introduction of IVF service has provided relief for the local population.

President Solih further said Maldivians can now seek affordable IVF services within the country as opposed to obtaining services from abroad which usually cost between MVR 300,000 to MVR 400,000.

Patients who are unable to conceive naturally seek either IVF or intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatments. While IUI services have been available in the Maldives, those seeking IVF treatments had to travel abroad due to the absence of IVF facilities.

A majority of Maldivians seek IVF services either from Sri Lanka or India, and generally incur an average cost of USD 2,000 to USD 5,000 (MVR 30,840 – MVR 77,100), excluding expenses for food and accommodation. The need for longer stays abroad further adds to the significant expenditure for patients.

The Chief Executive Officer of Tree Top Hospital Adil Moosa said that the introduction of the fertility center is a historic moment that will revolutionize the Maldivian health sector.

The newly introduced fertility center, developed at a cost of USD 1 million (MVR 15.4 million) offers its IVF services starting at the base price of MVR 46,000.

Tree Top Hospital launched its IVF services in collaboration with India's Saima center, while Maldives’ first fertility specialist Dr. Zakiya Ahmed will lead the facility.

In a previous interview, Adil had stated that the hospital aimed to offer a comprehensive solution to infertility issues.

"We aim to provide a comprehensive solution that includes consultation and surgery, rather than offering a partial solution. Our services follow international best practices, and we ensure that this service in the Maldives is affordable," said Adil.
