The state, on Tuesday, appointed a CEO for the National Drug Agency (NDA), tasked with rehabilitation of addicts, after four months of the position remaining vacant.

Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services, under which the agency operates, confirmed that Mohamed Habeeb , who holds a Master's Degree from the International College of Business and Technology, was appointed for the position.

Habeeb, who formerly worked at telecommunication giant Dhiraagu and Local Government Authority (LGA), was hired for a period of three years with a basic salary of MVR 18,000, and allowances adding up to MVR 13,500.

Former CEO of NDA Hassan Shaheel resigned from the post on September 27, 2020, claiming that a group of individuals were orchestrating a smear campaign against him and sending him death threats.

Since then, NDA's Deputy Director General Ali Shareef had filled in for the CEO position as well, till the recent appointment.

Mohamed Habeeb's appointment comes at a time when the public is calling for strong reform of rehabilitation services provided in the country.
