Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), on Wednesday, issued a warning for seafarers to take caution as the weather deteriorates across the country.

MET office issued white alerts for various parts of the country, predicting heavy rains, thunderstorms, strong winds and rough seas.

It was also forecasted that some parts of the country may experience waves as high as four to seven feet, along with the strong winds.

Hence, MNDF requested travellers to take extra precautions and ensure that all safety equipment is present and functional on vessels. They also advised against travelling at night.

According to Maldives' indigenous 'Nakaiy' calendar, the current period ‘Uthuru Halha’ is characterised by clear blue skies, strong winds and rough seas.

So while the choppy waters are expected, rains are indicative of a change from typical weather patterns and a difference in climate according to Maldives' ancestral teachings.

Wednesday, 13 January 2021 is the 8th day of the Uthuru Halha Nakaiy.
