Maldives may be affected by Cyclone Burevi, low pressure system: MET

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET), on Wednesday, announced that Tropical Cyclone Burevi and a low-pressure area southeast of Maldives in the Indian Ocean were set to affect the country's weather conditions over the upcoming five days.

MET forecasted average strong winds and rough seas across the archipelago starting from the afternoon or evening of Wednesday as a combined result of the two systems.

Speaking to local media outlet Mihaaru, Assistant Meteorologist Abdulla Hafiz stated that the northernmost islands of Maldives, in particular, would experience heavy rains and thunderstorms with an average wind speed of 35 miles per hour.

Per his projections, the wave height is expected to reach between three and five feet.

The assistant meteorologist urged all travellers using sea routes to exercise caution throughout the stated period.

According to MET, the deep depression which formed over Southwest Bay of Bengal is now approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka and has intensified into a Tropical Cyclone.

Furthermore, Tropical Cyclone Burevi is predicted to move westwards and make landfall in Sri Lanka by Wednesday evening.

Despite noting that the low-pressure system southeast of Maldives was intensifying in the Indian Ocean, Assistant Meteorologist Hafiz stated that figures indicated it to be presently moving away from the country.

The Meteorological Service assured that it would continue to monitor the situation and will be providing timely updates.

According to Maldives' indigenous 'Nakaiy' calendar, the current period 'Dhosha', the last segment of the rainy 'Hulhangu' season, is characterized by average rainfall and winds.

The forecasted deterioration of conditions in connection to Cyclone Burevi reflects a special weather event, and which are connected to global warming and subsequent climate change activity.
