Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) on Tuesday, issued a yellow alert over central and northern atolls.

The advisory was issued in relation to torrential rain, strong winds and storm surges forecast by MET to regions starting from Haa Alif Atoll to Vaavu Atoll.

According to local media Mihaaru, Assistant Meteorologist of MET Thahmeen Abdul Kareem stated that Maldives will experience severe weather during the upcoming 48-hour period due to 'Cyclone Kyarr'.

The category 5 tropical cyclone formed in the Arabian Sea, was recorded as the second most powerful storm in the region and the largest in 12 years.

In addition, Kyarr contributed to setting a record for the Northern Indian Ocean Basin as its' most intense cyclone season to date. A total of four named cyclones have formed over the territory in 2019.

As a result of the worsening climate crisis, elevated global temperatures and sea surface temperatures are causing an increase of sustained severe weather patterns across the globe.
