Local NGO Family Legal Clinic (FLC) on Monday announced a support group programme for individuals that experience sexual harassment in the workplace.

Launched with grant assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this is the second such programme by FLC this year, titled 'Let's Talk', which will be held biweekly from December 27, 2020, to January 16, 2021.

Comprising of a mental health support segment and a legal advice segment, the support group is free of charge and will be held virtually.

The mental health sessions will be facilitated by Specialist Psychotherapist Abdullah Faseeh, while FLC will provide the legal advice sessions.

FLC stated that the programme aims to help participants cope with the mental health consequences of experiencing harassment, as well as provide legal advice on how to report and address the issue at their workplaces.

"It is also hoped that having a space to share experiences and find community will empower participants and give them the courage to take action", added the NGO in a press release.

Registrations for 'Let's Talk' are currently open. FLC invites interested individuals to apply by texting “SUPPORT GROUP” to its hotline at +960 9977771, along with their full name, contact number, and email address.

The NGO noted that maximum 15 participants will be admitted on a first come, first served basis.

'Let's Talk' is part of FLC's broader programme 'Empower for Change', which commenced at the beginning of this year. FLC held its first free support group, titled 'Moving Forward in Uncertainty', during last October and November, for individuals responsible for supporting families, who were financially affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

FLC is an NGO that provides pro bono legal advice to individuals with family-related or domestic violence issues, as well as for victims of sexual harassment and abuse. Founded in 2014 and officially registered as an NGO in 2017, FLC works with a dedicated team of lawyers and an in-house legal resource person.

In 2019, FLC provided 261 consultations and serviced 201 clients (145 women and 56 men), as well as reached over 387 people in awareness programmes. Many of their clients are located outside the Greater Male’ region with little to no access to the legal system.

FLC's hotline for legal assistance, +960 997771, is open Sundays – Thursdays between 0900 - 1700 hrs.
