Relevant authorities are to take part in a collaborative webinar, led by the Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC), on Saturday night on the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2020.

Titled with this year’s theme, “Move for mental health: let’s invest”, the webinar targeted towards public and government counterparts, UN agencies and NGOs as well as CSOs, will take place from 2030hrs to 2200hrs on Zoom and will be livestreamed on Facebook.

In addition to First Lady Fazna Ahmed, experts from Maldivian Red Crescent, UNICEF Maldives, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)’s Mental Health Centre, Health Protection Agency and the President’s Office will deliver speeches during the webinar.

Discussions will mainly revolve around this year’s slogan, which emphasizes the importance of sustaining and increasing investments for mental health, while acknowledging the many progressive strides that have been taken in the sector.

Participants of the webinar will elaborate on key points such as the importance of preparedness and scaling up service provision of PSS to help meet demands and fill gaps, prevalence of mental health conditions in Maldives and the availability of services with focus on the care gap and the investment deficit, from a policy standpoint, and addressing the stigma against the most vulnerable and the importance of inclusion in addressing mental health stigma.

Moreover, the effect of the ongoing pandemic on the mental health of children and young people will be discussed, along with the National Mental Health Plan of Maldives, strategic direction and availability of services regionally.

Speakers will also address the challenges and opportunities for mental health service providers, and building back stronger, highlighting the role of mental health service providers, post-pandemic to promote mental and emotional wellbeing.

“This campaign offers opportunities for all of us to do something life-affirming: as individuals, to take concrete actions in support of our own mental health, and to support friends and family who are struggling; as employers, to take steps towards putting programmes in place for employee wellness; as governments, to commit to establishing or scaling-up mental health services; and as journalists, to tell the world what more can and must be done to make mental health a reality for everyone”, stated the World Health Organisation (WHO).
