Baa atoll Kamadhoo Council has decided that it will develop a water sports park on the island.
The council has announced seeking parties to conduct a Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the water park.
Council President Hassan Zareer speaking with Mihaaru News said that the park is being developed to address the residents' need for a beach area, as the current beach is used by tourists.
The water park will provide residents with a dedicated beach for picnics and water sports, ensuring locals can swim without inconveniencing tourists.
Zareer added that a contractor has already been selected to procure the necessary equipment, expected to arrive within 40 days.
The development of the water park, which includes a beach, is being prioritized in the island's development plan and has been allocated MVR 800,000 from the council's budget.
The project will be constructed on land allocated to Dhiraagu, and once completed, it will serve the island’s 500 residents.
Kamadhoo is particularly popular during Eid holidays, attracting many visitors for traditional displays and dances.
