Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Adam Azim has succeeded in being elected as the new Mayor of Male' City.
Azim won the election with 7621 votes, 2590 votes more than his closest contender.
Azim has earned widespread trust during his many years serving the public.
Azim, 52 years of age now, started his working life when he was just sixteen, at the Health Port Desk of Velana International Airport. He has since worked at Air Maldives and Maldives Immigration Services.
He is the brother of Mohamed Nazim, leader of Maldives National Party (MNP) and former Defence Minister. His father AbduRasheed is best known as the founder of one of Maldives' leading construction companies, RCC.
Azim has previously led three different public companies: MTCC, STO and MWSC. He comes with experience in financial and senior management roles spanning over three decades.
During his time at STO, he went on to initiate the establishment of pharmacies in all the inhabited islands of Maldives.
Assuming the post of MD at MWSC in 2018, the complaint from the public that he heard most was concerning the flooding of Male' streets. At the time, he set up a special department for handling sanitation work, brought in experts from abroad, and found a solution for leaky junctions during heavy rains in Male' streets.
In his tenure at MTCC, Azim established the much appreciated Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry system and bus services. Today, inter island trips can conveniently be booked through a special RTL app for affordable prices, and nearly 25,000 persons per day use the bus services.
While the public lauds him for his achievements in MTCC, staff who have previously worked under him highly praise him for his integrity and efficiency.
Speaking to Mihaaru News, Azim claims that if elected as Mayor, he plans to "transform the entire Male' City, turning it into a fragrant garden".
Azim's pledges include making Male' streets more accessible and easier to use, provide solutions to parking woes, as well as leaky air conditioner units facing many street pavements. He claims that upon election, he will commence work to develop the areas in the Greater Male' region where new land and housing units have been provided.
In the Male' Mayor election, Azim had four others contending against him for the seat. These are former Attorney General Azima Shakoor from People's National Congress (PNC), council member Saif Fathih from The Democrats, former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed as an independent candidate, and finally one other independent candidate, Shuaib Ali.
