Effective Thursday, Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has placed in effect a ban on all liquid medicines manufactured at Pakistan's Pharmix Laboratories.

An alert released by MFDA stated Pakistan's Drug Regulation Authority issued a statement indicating that two liquid medicines produced at the said laboratory contains harmful chemicals diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. This resulted in MFDA earlier banning both these medicines from sale and consumption in the Maldives.

The alert went on to state that other countries have also highlighted that liquid medicines manufactured in this company contain these harmful chemicals.

"As we have come to note an issue such as this in liquid medication produced by the Pharmix Company, as a precautionary measure we issue a ban today on the import, sale or consumption of any liquid medicines produced by this laboratory," the alert reads.

In relation to this alert, pharmacies across the country have been instructed to isolate and destroy six different medicines under the set guidelines.
